When you walk through the fire and waters… November 5, 2009

Yesterday morning God spoke to me from 1 Cor 15: 57 “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Amen and amen- I believe that His word is always timely for the season. In the past few days, I had received news that the leaders of the Kids’ Camp recently ended had been struck by tragedy. 3 of the leaders had in a short span of two days lost their fathers to sickness, one of them slain by a fatal gun-shot.
While my heart really goes out to them (especially Ajarn Lakana, who’s due this month with her second child), I don’t doubt that God is in control. Please keep them in your prayers. They are:
- Dorothy Jason- Founder of Gerald Khoo foundation, a Sporean missionary who lost her father on Monday;
- Ajarn Lakana- Leader of the Children’s Ministry in Thailand who lost her father to a serious illness sometime between Tues-Wed;
- Nit- Staff of Gerald Khoo foundation, who lost her dad to a fatal gun-shot in Chaiyaphum on Tuesday.
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

Exodus 15:27 “Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.”
Around the same time that Vincent got his new van (the one we’ve been waiting & praying for), I also received an invitation to help out with a kids camp. In retrospect, this is the best thing to happen to me in these 8 months. Below I’ve amassed a list of the 10 things that I’ve learnt and gained from this camp:
- Greater clarity of how the lines of authority, mission decentralisation & that I am not free to do as I will (asking for my mission pastor’s advice, finding that I needed to get the local church pastor’s permission to join the camp etc);
- Intense enjoyment of kids’ worship and the revelation that the way kids worship with a pure heart can really usher in the presence of God;
- New friendships and contacts with locals & missionaries;
- Received a double portion from the Lord in all the ministry sessions;
- Attained my monthly quota of (my much-needed) English conversations in these mere 3 days;
- Seeing how God uses me in little ways- be it selling t-shirts, pulling up a chair for someone or covering a sleeping kid with a coverlet;
- Greater awareness of the differences between Vincent and my calling & ministry;
- Greater awareness of how the Singaporean in me influences the way I run & do things;
- Ability to exercise my creativity in this camp by making flags (yay!!); and
- Finally the understanding that I desperately need to pass whatever tests God is putting me through now (endurance, flexibility) and my desire to be “promoted” from where I am right now.

Today I helped out at the Harvest house with prayer flags. The foundation is organizing a kids’ camp next week in conjunction with other churches and the leader Mrs Thoongbin had requested me to help out. With 300 kids signed up and more to come, the camp is also holding a prayer walk around the city. That’s where the flags will be waved to proclaim God’s dominance…
So for the better part of the day, I was working on my Thai fonts, cutting out the templates all the way til evening. Somehow the work doesn’t seem all that hard with friends around me…

From my house, it’s a 3-min walk to the slums along the railway. How ironic that a relatively well-off neighborhood like ours, within a stone’s throw from the goverment offices, would be situated so close to the squatters…
